Volta Estate Winery is an agrarian complex located in the Rosehall hamlet of Southern Ontario’s Prince Edward County, that blends winery with hospitality, and leverages architecture to customize a meaningful place for visitors, workers, and residents by defining new building typologies that allow spaces to oscillate between processing, performance, firing, and tasting across a covered courtyard.
Sustainable, carbon neutralizing strategies define the wine process and facility where the seeming disadvantages of flat terrain, low water, high limestone, and strong wind are harnessed to shape both the architecture and the wine production.
The architecture will reflect the wine in its quiet grandness and unexpected beauty while embracing and warming the palette. Volta is inspired by the informality of Ontario farms now infused with an agrarian sublime that magnetically draws each redefined ‘farm shed’ across a covered courtyard that unspools to the exterior with deep overhangs to tame the unique microclimate with details mined from the particulars of its rich site.
Volta Estate Winery will be a place that feels welcoming to a wide variety of people, a place to experience and to discover the wine, the process, the place, and a hospitality program that naturally emerges from all three.
