DeMicoli and Associates executed the design and delivery of this new prestigious head office for Vodafone at Skyparks Business Centre, Malta International Airport. This meant an inventive challenge as the final product had to go hand in hand with the brand and identity of the company. The client brief was to create a stimulating, fun, yet unmistakably corporate place to work, whilst encouraging the exchange of ideas and creativity. An open plan and facilities for hot desking were desired.
The greeting area concept was to have a minimal space which celebrates the connectivity of the mobile smart phone. Display tubes were designed to interconnect through a system of angular backlit panels. The main focal point is the reception desk - now a metamorphosis of the iconic Vodafone apostrophe.
While some meeting spaces encourage the free exchange of ideas, others are planned to offer seclusion and privacy. Selected themes were based on suggestions by the offices’ future inhabitants. The results are informal meeting or breakout areas within communal spaces with direct references to connectivity, cinema and the beach. One private meeting room carries the aura of a library while another references the colour red as used on the Maltese Islands. Colour and humour feature with equal measure throughout.
The design approach for the staff cafeteria was to highlight innovation and fluidity via a walk-through, which acts as a link between the open plan office spaces. The Cafeteria, with its ‘fin wall’ acting as its focal point, inspires a 24/7 work feel. It adapts its form according to the immediate function required e.g. a bench, in the particular space it occupies, thus wrapping around walls and service elements to create a clean finish. Where adjacent to work spaces, it screens off a naturally noisier area by assisting in the absorption of sound.
