This design is a representation of a collaborative design with local furniture student, Olivia Cyr. She requested that Hayley help her create a meaningful pattern using scripting knowledge and research for a creative concept for the piece's panel doors. We exchanged many concepts and after a field visit to La Jolla beach where we witnessed the ecologically degradation occuring due to erosion, we decided to design a pattern that would bring awareness to this pressing issue. Erosion at sea cliffs in San Diego is part of a much larger issue. These sea cliffs define a cautionary tale
about the effects of climate change, sea level rise and human intervention on fragile ecosystems. Stream flow and sediment are unable to reach the coast due to
dams and urban watershed migration which have led to the reduction of
the natural sand flux by up to 55%. It is possible that by the end of
the century these northern San Diego beaches will be lost unless natural
sand supply is restored. Olivia and I have decided to go with a erosion behavior script that mimicks the density gradient that occurs naturally with
erosion. Olivia took the pattern
a step further to populate a pattern within a pattern by advancing the
erosion to step 3 in various cells or a full cut through the material.Find out more on our blog: http://simbiotekdesignlab.com/integrating-pattern-visualizing-natural-phenomena/
