PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
On a gently sloping .58 acre property in Los Angeles, design an affordable housing complex for thirty families where one member of each family has chronic mental illness. Include licensed child care and support facilities for service provider and residents, on grade parking, and as much open recreation space as possible.
PROJECT SOLUTION:
The floor plan single loads the units along an elevated garden terrace which accommodates on grade parking underneath.The building mass is also split apart and staggered to reduce the overall appearance of its volume, maximize the penetration of natural light, and create a variety of open community patios on each level. Consequently, all units have at least two, if not three, orientations. The corner volume, which accommodates most community facilities, is scaled and detailed to be a whimsical place and to make a gentle interface between itself and the surrounding neighborhood.
