Long noted as a cultural and geographical crossroads, historic Frederick, MD, has recently emerged as a premier foodie destination where museums meet martini bars and cutting-edge cuisine can be experienced inside the storied walls of Civil War-era buildings. Located at this intersection of history and contemporary epicureanism, Visitation Frederick is a mixed-use development that builds on New Urbanism concepts to breathe life into the campus and structures of the former private all-girls school from which the project takes its name.
Informed by community consensus, the design of Visitation Frederick responds to immediate demand for both an intimate boutique hotel from which to explore the region’s many cultural offerings, as well as amenity-rich condominiums that appeal to empty-nesters eager for maintenance-free, luxury living. Accordingly, this adaptive reuse development is comprised of a 65-room hotel, complete with a conference and fitness center, an intimate performance venue, and white-tablecloth restaurant and bar, as well as a three-building residential component totaling 25 luxury single-floor units ranging in size from 1,500 to 2,500 SF. Visitation Frederick also maximizes the site’s location at the heart of a community enlivened by pedestrian-friendly streetscapes to foster a distinct sense of place and support the increasingly active urban lifestyle of the project’s intended residents and guests.
Visually, the project celebrates and expands upon the architectural restraint of the Catholic all-girls academy it once served as. This design vernacular, dubbed “austere luxury,” reinterprets historic elements such as the chapel’s stained-glass windows through the lens of contemporary, yet restrained gestures. In addition, Visitation Frederick’s hotel component will sensibly incorporate the brand standards of a global hospitality company. Lastly, working in partnership with the MD Historic Trust and the National Park Services, our team secured maximum tax credits for the project.
