After the merger of their two companies, VIP and Meridian sought to unify their work cultures and brand in one space. To make use of the selected space’s existing features while also creating a fresh, new atmosphere, DBI reused the ceiling grid and tile, carpet, phone booths, interior and perimeter offices, plumbing locations, and systems furniture while also incorporating several original, colorful architectural design elements.
Of particular importance to the client was the prominent display of the company’s entire new name. DBI took the unusual approach of mounting the company’s stainless steel signage lower than eye level, centered on a frosted glass wall in the reception area, to provide a view of the Reston Town Center’s skyline. In addition, the client requested the abundant presence of writeable surfaces throughout the space, so DBI designed writeable plywood “whiteboards,” writeable walls, and, in some areas, even writeable worksurfaces.
Fusing the two companies’ branding colors, DBI created a vibrant, multi-colored, “striped” design theme, which carried throughout the space. Banquette cushions in the breakroom feature this new design, while plywood artwork panels of the same colors flank the breakroom bulkheads and cased openings. A slatted wall made from the same stained maple plywood adds a playful touch to the elevator lobby. With each individual slat stained to coordinate with VIP/Meridian’s company colors, these whimsical design elements truly represent the coming together of the two company cultures.
Divesting itself of the existing space’s high-paneled workstations surrounded by perimeter offices that blocked the flow of natural light, the company opened up the new office through the addition of collaboration zones that function at a variety of working heights (e.g., the café table and chairs in one meeting room and the lounge furniture in the adjacent meeting room).
