HTAP provided architecture design and interior design for two duplexes and another villa for a same client within Vinhomes Central Park Villas Compound in Ho Chi Minh City. The houses were empty concrete shells cladded with faux-colonial features. Our architectural design process involved deleting and replacing those features to create a more contemporary presence.
The materials chosen for the exterior facades were cement board siding, basalt portals and aluminum/glass windows and doors. Siding, a construction method more common outside of Vietnam and normally made of timber, was appropriated in Vietnam to provide a second screen shielding the building effectively from sunlight. The deep basalt portals were detailed to lead the rain water away from the interior.
For the yards, we added a raised L-shaped decking wrapping the side and the back of the house, as the result creating a generous outdoor space conveniently adjacent and at the same level with the ground floor living room, dining room, and kitchen. The deck area was equipped with an outdoor kitchen, BBQ appliances and outdoor furnishing to accommodate the owners' social lifestyle. The decking was designed with gaps allowing rain water to be absorbed directly to the ground below, reducing the possibility of rain water running off to the street and flooding the neighborhood. We also exhausted the use of timber pergolas in this area to accommodate the tropical heat. The generous use of treated timber was possible due to the recent availability of pine and ash treated to international standards and reliable water repellant made from a local resin.
For the interior we introduced an ambiance that blended the warmth typically found in a traditional interior and the simplicity typically found in a contemporary space. Our pastel of materials and colors was a fusion of compatible contrasts: The cool minimally-designed Miele appliances encased in the warm beech cabinetry and the contemporary bleached-oak flooring set against the classic dark walnut shutters. Similarly the lighting design was the interplay between the contrasts where contemporary-designed light fixtures producing warm comfortable light. We furnished the project with Danish furniture, particularly with Wendebo sofas and Bo Concept dining table and chairs, indulging a contemporary look without compromising comfort.
Among the affluent class in Vietnam, faux-colonial architecture implies wealth and power with excessive design features. The design of this project provides an alternative stance with a more-restrained modern design that can be refined and subtle.
