For decades, the pub with a ballroom in the village square of Olšany village served as a place for cultural activities of the inhabitants. It was also one of the filming locations of czech legendary film The Inheritance.
However, after years without proper maintenance, the technical condition of the building deteriorated, balls could no longer be held there and the pub survived on compromises. As the building in the middle of the village was in danger of becoming a ruin, the municipality decided to buy the house and build a dignified space with its original use. Its location is ideal for such a significant purpose.
The design of the new cultural house is based on the archetype of traditional rural buildings. The main entrance from the village square is accentuated by stone cladding. A secondary entrance from the road is used mainly for supply. The forecourt is directly adjacent to the ballroom and the village square, creating the opportunity for a variety of events in all seasons to revive the activities in the village centre. The balls, feasts, theatres and plum brandy parties held until recently, as well as the great interest of the residents in the building, prove that these words will not remain empty.
In addition to the ballroom, the building also houses a pub, which operates either independently or as a support facility for larger events. The premises of the pub intended for daily operation are equipped simply, the used furnishings and materials can be easily replaced. On the other hand, the generous space of the ballroom, open to the roof structure, with gallery seating and a stage, gives a representative impression, also thanks to the use of quality materials.
Acoustics was an important part of the project. The main reflective surfaces of the hall are spatially structured and fitted with absorbent materials so that the audience can understand the spoken word well and enjoy the experience of listening to the music at the same time. The concrete ceiling structure in the pub has a textured formwork imprint to reduce the coctail party effect. The building is closely surrounded by residential homes, so high-quality windows, wall and roof construction was used to limit the spread of noise to the outside environment.
