Renovating a 40-Year-Old Family Home in Yen Akat for Three Generations
In the context of Bangkok 40 years ago, early modern homes began to appear scattered along various alleys, marking an era that birthed unique architectural styles. However, as the world and economy evolved, the increasing value of urban properties prompted a reevaluation of these homes. Preserving older buildings has become a testament to valuing architectural conservation, offering irreplaceable emotional and historical significance.
Passing the Home Through Generations
Villa Yen Akat represents the second generation's dedication to renovating the family home, ensuring it is preserved and passed down to future generations. It serves as a cherished legacy, maintaining the warmth and nostalgia of a bygone era, allowing family memories to endure over time.
Our Home is Timeless
The designers' concept involves blending contemporary design elements with a focus on wood while adapting certain features to meet modern demands. This includes using transom windows above doors—a nod to past architectural trends—to bring natural light into the rooms. Retaining original walls, doors, and windows, along with façade patterns inspired by old railings, ceiling fixtures, and traditional window mechanisms, enhances the decor with elements rarely found in today's homes.

Key functions within the home are tailored for a family member with visual impairments, relying on spatial familiarity for daily living. Furniture placement and functional design are carefully considered to create an environment that supports efficient and comfortable everyday life.
Integrating Family Heritage into Modern Architecture
At mArchten, we embrace the philosophy that exceptional design begins with attentive listening and understanding the unique stories of those who inhabit the spaces we create. This guiding principle was paramount in the renovation of this cherished family home, transforming it into a living reflection of the family’s values and dreams.
The architectural team engaged deeply with the family, ensuring their voices were at the heart of every decision. This home is the product of a truly collaborative effort, shaped by the rich tapestry of input from each generation—from the wisdom of the grandparents, who cherished traditions, to the fresh perspectives of the grandchildren, eager to innovate while respecting their legacy.
mArchten’s role was to weave these diverse threads into a cohesive design that resonates with every family member. The aim was not merely to create a functional living space but to craft an environment where every nook and corner echoes the personality and shared memories of the family. This endeavor reflects a commitment to honoring the past while providing a framework for new stories to unfold, making the home a vibrant, living entity that adapts and grows with its residents.
