Recently, a residence, which overlooks Tomo -Port on the uptown, slightly remaining the old days’ appearances and fell into decay, was found.
Bamboo and maple trees thickly cover the site in an extensive mountain built eighty years ago. The residence stood in the environment where architecture and landscape such as gate, a storehouse, stonewall and an artificial waterfall using a reservoir formed a harmonious whole.
However, most of the main building did not retain its original state and as decomposed. The remaining parts were also in very bad form. Though, we could feel the architect’s thoughtfulness from things such as insulation attained by two-step roof, which is similar to pent roof, ventilation at an attic space, carefully detailed wooden skill and, above all, a veranda or a sunroom that remains us of Chochikukyo that skill exists in Oyamazaki in Kyoto. Koji Fujii, who was a pioneer of environmental engineering, designed the residence. It is the only remaining resort villa of Fujii’s elder brother, Yoichiemon Fujii. The villa was known by the name of ‘Kuroganeya’ in hometown of Fukuyama city.
In this occasion, we not only restore the residence, but also newly convert it by reading the existing shape and state.
In the first place, we, together with client, reconsidered the value of the architecture by finding out a new way of temporary residence that were only residential purposed but are figures of various spaces, altering by diverse behaviors, when the owner is not in use. They create a way of sustainable architecture including outdoor spaces that are not only restricted to residence, sometimes serving as a tearoom or an artists’ exhibition gallery, and sometimes providing a place for a performance and gathering.
It is a project to meet and stand close to four seasons’ nature by inheriting old memories and regenerating sceneries of a new environment.
