Villa of Two Brothers project, designed by Marzieh Architecture Studio, is located in a forested mountainous area of Mazandaran. It was commissioned by two brothers with a very close familial bond. The clients requested a shared villa with distinct private spaces. The design evolved from this concept, resulting in two separate villas that share common social areas and collectively present as a single, cohesive structure.
The project consists of two blocks, oriented north and south, positioned at a 90-degree angle to each other and connected by a centrally located pool. The entrance serves as the initial point of connection, with the eastern yard designated as an important communal area for living and family gatherings, seamlessly integrating with the natural surroundings. Due to the significant emphasis both families placed on the pool and swimming, the pool was strategically designed as the main social hub between the two blocks on the second floor.
To accommodate the larger family’s need for more space and rooms, the northern block was designed with three floors covering an area of 485 square meters, while the southern block features two floors covering 325 square meters. The design and positioning ensure that the larger northern block does not overshadow the southern block in terms of length and height. From the main pathway, the two blocks appear equal and form a unified and symmetrical building, reminiscent of the simplest pentagon shape, symbolizing the archetypal house, and adhering to the local architectural style of sloped roofs.
The entire building is rotated 45 degrees relative to the north, ensuring both blocks receive equal exposure to airflow and sunlight. The living yard space between the two blocks remains shaded for more hours of the day, enhancing comfort.
Although the pool is situated in an open space overlooking the forest, its position in the gap between the two blocks provides relative privacy, shielding it from the view of pathways and neighboring villas. The elongated plan, inspired by traditional local architecture, allows natural airflow and the dominant western wind to permeate the interior. Public and service spaces are located on the ground floor, private and semi-private spaces on the first floor, with the pool, living spaces, and main terraces on the second floor. The master bedroom is situated on the third floor of the northern block.
Villa of Two Brothers seeks to revive the eastern tradition of family living while respecting modern needs for privacy and high-quality spaces in harmony with nature. This design underscores the importance of deep family relationships and peaceful coexistence, values that are gradually being lost in the modern world.
