A White Clean Line on the Landscape

The main idea of the project is inspired by the unique characteristics of the traditional housing development of Cyclades where the settlements were developed in close relation to the ground, the natural landscape, the water and road ways. According to this, the complex is comprised by a dynamic line on the common grounds of the lot. The complex does not follow a strict geometric pattern but instead follows the natural shape of the landscape along with its distinctive characteristics. The concept of the villa is completed with the existence of a cuboid structure that conveys the “cycladic unit” and harmonically coexists with the natural flow of the landscape therefore providing a more subtle and human size scale to the structure that again refers to the traditional cycladic architecture.

This abstract line organizes the complex in three levels where the middle level is developed as the main area of the villa and the lower level houses the two guest rooms, providing the maximum possible privacy to the complex. The entrance to the villa is through the upper level that is located in close proximity to the road. From there, a small outdoor linear path creates a lively walk through the area while providing the resident to experience the topology of the landscape, discover overviews of the sea, mountain and city. At the end of this path through the gap between the unit and the rest of the complex, a gradual descent occurs which imminently paints the breathtaking view of the landscape while the villa is revealed along with the outdoors area that up until this moment it seemed as if it was one with the landscape. The largest part of the complex has an embedded area that vanishes in the ground, letting the white abstract line communicate with the complicated incline level of the landscape. Aside that, it offers an extra advantage to the complex by ensuring its bioclimatic attributes throughout the year.

Entering the indoors area of the villa, there is a clear view of the living room. The dining table stands on a higher level than the living room on the rear and a clear view of the horizon is provided, with the in-wall fireplace standing beside as the rock staircase and the small backyard blend in on the background. While the guest is navigating to the right side of the indoors area, a view of the internal geometry of the main staircase is shown which gradually blends with the ceiling to reveal the kitchen and the rich in light corridor that lead to the more private areas of the villa. The arrangement of the bedrooms has been carried in such a way that every room shares the same unique view of the scenery of the landscape and outdoors area. It is also important every room to be spacious, with sufficient storage and a private restroom and bathroom while being well lit and airy. This is achieved through atriums that bring natural sunlight inside.
