SURPRISE
“I want my designs to astonish…”
Pål, just like the proverbial shoemaker’s children, went for many years without a Ross house of his own. He and his family were focused on building a strong company and raising a family, and the circumstances for taking that next big step just weren’t favorable. Then, in 2006 Pål purchased a lovely, if somewhat difficult, north-facing property. Design after design was put on the table, but getting that cherry tree into the living room proved to be a real challenge. Finally, in 2007 Villa Atrium was born.
“Your house is round?”
Surprise #1.
Atrium is completely round, 360°, in fact. There is an atrium at the center which is also round. From above the house looks like a donut.
Surprise #2.
The first thing one sees upon entering is the atrium garden, complete with cherry tree. One gleefully moves from the hall toward the glass doors in order to more closely examine the “outdoor” room. During the summer months the doors remain open and the atrium becomes an integral part of the house. There is also a much-appreciated hot tub.
“Where does that staircase go..?”
Surprise #3.
As a testimony to his formative years in Spain, Pål chose to make the entire roof a terrace, complete with outdoor kitchen and grill. It is perfect for parties, private enough for sunbathing, and great for children on bikes.
How were you able to furnish it?”
Surprise #4.
The house was easily furnished. Pål never leaves anything to chance and always designs his homes furnished. The open floor plan includes the kitchen, dining room, and living room, but each space is clearly defined, with its own function and character.
Is your house cozy?
Surprise #5.
The overall impression of Atrium is one of tranquility. There are three basic interior elements; white walls, dark, solid oak floors, and slate floors, all of which provide an excellent background for any number of interior design styles.
Floor lighting runs from the kitchen to the master bedroom and provided an excellent nightlight for children and guests. It was the perfect home in which to raise small children. The round shape encouraged them to play and build tracks all around the house.
Years later, Atrium still has the power to surprise and delight.
