This
is the proposed remodel of the existing Vieux Fort Fish market facility. The
remodel is necessary to modernize the existing fish market in order to encourage
the patronage of St. Lucians and tourist alike. To say that the fish market in
its present state is underutilized is an understatement. The low turnout of
customers is a direct result of the unsightly conditions that exist presently. To have a facility such as this one seldom
used seems like an absolute waste of a good resource, for this reason a strong
architectural intervention is crucial in the revitalization of the fish market
and perhaps the neighborhood.Aesthetically,
we introduced a ceiling soffit through the hallways that mimics the undulations
of the ocean’s waves. This ceiling soffit will be made of polished stainless
steel and will be highly reflective. Where the soffit breaks through the roof, a
reenactment of the powerful force of the waves as they break is the scenario
that is achieved to create our skylight. The light which shines through this
new skylight will become a constant reminder to community of the brighter
possibilities that could be revealed through this facility’s uniqueness.Apart
from the irregular shaped ceiling soffit, there will be the introduction of
some stylistic graphic that expresses the words “FISH” and “MARKET”. Like the
ceiling soffit, the market graphic will suspend from the existing ceiling by
steel cables to demarcate one of the two proposed entrances. Bearing in mind
that the current entrance is ambiguous and uninviting, we believe this is the
appropriate solution. In order to develop a strong identity and visual
presence, it was necessary to propose an additional entrance at the front of
the building as the “main” entrance. To distinguish this main entrance from the
other entrances, a similar text graphic will be included in the ceiling and
part of the floor area serving as a partition separating the entrance from the
new vegetable stand. In an effort to fill the space with
as much light as possible, we introduced white tile flooring to capture and
reflect light in tandem with the polished ceiling soffit and suspended globe
lamps traveling through the hallways. These three elements will allow the space
to be filled with a warm yellow light that customers will find more inviting. The
vitality of any space is represented by its function in the community.
Throughout histories diverse cultures, the idea of a “market” has always been
the glue that binds the community. The Vieux Fort Fish Market needs to be the
binding force of this community and to achieve this, we have provided an
outdoor courtyard that will not only provide a place for communal gathering but
encourage people to use this space as a place for community activities and
events.The problem with a fish
market where fish is the only retail item is its inability to compete with the
supermarkets which provide a wide range of food products. The introduction of a
vegetable stand, a meat market and mini restaurant will be additions that would
address the issue of diversity and draw the customer to this venue. The suggestion of going to buy fish
should not be a chore or an unpleasant experience like what we have presently
at the Vieux Fort Fish Market. To resolve these issues we certainly need a
building that makes its mark on the surrounding landscape. This building must
provide an identity that reflects a new breed of fish markets. Well lit,
pleasantly tactile interior and exterior spaces as well are the components that
are integral to the success of this project. The genuine intent is to create a
pleasant experience for the customers, that experience will be the basis of
their constant return. Let
the patronage begin!
