A Dynamic Learning Environment
The aim of the VIA University College campus complex in Skejby, Århus, is to consolidate the activities of one of Denmark’s largest educational institutions. Covering more than 27,000 m², the complex brings together various specialist disciplines under one roof, fostering links and cohesion across fields.
Guided by a vision to create a flexible, dynamic, cross-disciplinary study environment, the campus facilitates easy knowledge exchange and idea generation among students, lecturers, and visitors. A central plaza, located at the intersection of the building’s four wings, serves as a meeting place for approximately 2,000 students who spend their days on campus.
Above the plaza, the building opens towards the sky, drawing in daylight, while rhythmically staggered balconies and terraces define the atrium beneath the expansive light from above. The core functions of the complex are centred around the plaza: auditoriums, multimedia centres, the canteen, and other shared amenities. Additionally, intimate meeting rooms for reflection, group workstations with ample space, and social meeting spots and lounge areas for cultivating a sense of community are integral parts of the campus.
Both inside and outside, the new campus features a simple yet raw aesthetic, reflecting the ambition to offer a robust building for real-life use. This is notably evident in the strong corten steel frames of the exterior, whose rusty red colour creates a link between the simple, bright interior and the surrounding landscape.
