The Nuevo Continente School, as part of the quarter century anniversary of the foundation of its Querétaro campus, developed a master plan in several stages in order to upgrade its facilities. This master plan was based upon values dedicated to its main stakeholders: the students in elementary education. The values involved were flexibility, security, mobility and comfort.
One of the guiding principles of the project was the replacement and construction of new buildings to house students while their own are being updated. Consequently, the first challenge was to relocate 400 students. Temporary buildings were avoided to optimize resources, so the answer to this relocation was a building resilient enough to allow wax and wane in an economical and expeditious manner, and which later would became an integral part the refurbishing project.
As happens in several other parts of the world, obesity is one of the main contemporary problems of Mexico: the country ranks first in obesity among the countries that are part of the OECD. Diabetes, which is one of its main consequences, is the leading cause of death nationwide. This problem begins to develop during childhood, so it is crucial to address it since children are in school. The first building of this project, in addition to complying with a program based on space versatility and the climatic conditions of the site, attempted to respond to this social problem by being placed next to the sport courts in order to encourage physical activity.
The first part of the master plan consists of a central building of 12 x 100 meters, which combined with the lateral pads form a 2.700 m2 building divided into two levels. The first floor houses the control services, toilets and parking spaces for management. The road pattern suggests what will be a circuit allowing students to ascend and descend safely, comfortably and efficiently from transport, relieving traffic from nearby roads.
The second floor meets the challenge of new educational paradigms providing a 100 meter long gallery formed by four mega-classrooms of 20 x 7 meters interrelated through their hallways and side corridors. These classrooms vary their height between 3.30 and 4.5 meters. Each is easily divisible in 2, 3 or 4 spaces without losing its properties of cross ventilation, natural lighting and independent access. These features enhance learning and stimulate intrinsic motivation regarding the student’s production of knowledge. The corridors, which go around the whole building’s perimeter, double as a natural stands for sporting events.
The building’s language is the same monumental one that characterizes Mexican architecture and forcefully exposes its concrete structure, which gradually fades into the front perspective. Contact with the environment is still present through the 2.70 meters windows, while the warm touch of tropical wood in doors, benches and flowerboxes remind us of our primary relationship with mother earth.
