In Catalonia, the plots in the old villages for detached housing are usually around 16 feet wide, adapted to the typical structural system: two parallel load-bearing walls that support regular beams to build a slab. Sometimes, as it happens in this case, the resultant plot becomes outstretched, making it difficult to access light and ventilation in all the rooms of the house.
The project pretends to solve this situation with the vertical patio so that all of the rooms are correctly illuminated and ventilated. The patio finally becomes the center of the house as it organizes and distributes the different areas of the house and also generates a visual diagonal connection between the three floors. On the ground floor, the living room and open kitchen surround the patio and extend to the outdoor garden. In the first floor the toilets are set along one of the parting walls, leaving the central area between the patio and the staircase as a common studio while bedrooms are set on both sides of the house. The second floor is a single space living room connected to the terrace.
