Vertical Haven is an urban residence located in the bustling city of Hanoi, designed by LADD Architects in collaboration with THREEPLUS Design to seamlessly blend practical functionality with a strong connection to natural elements. The inspiration behind this project was to create a living space that addresses the challenges of narrow, urban plots while ensuring comfort, safety, and a deep sense of connectivity for its occupants. The design was driven by the need to maximize natural light and ventilation within a confined space while maintaining privacy and security.

One of the significant challenges faced during the project was working with the narrow and elongated lot, a common feature in urban areas of Hanoi. This layout posed difficulties in ensuring that natural light and airflow could reach all parts of the house. To overcome these challenges, the design incorporates vertical slats and large glass panels, which enhance the flow of light and air throughout the interior. These elements are complemented by the use of sustainable materials such as non-toxic, recycled wood, aligning with the project’s environmental objectives.

The spatial configuration of Vertical Haven is carefully considered to create a sense of openness despite the site’s constraints. The house is organized vertically, with multiple levels connected by atriums and skylights that bring natural light deep into the interior spaces. This layout fosters a strong connection between different areas of the house, enhancing the sense of unity within the living environment.

The collaboration between LADD Architects and THREEPLUS Design is evident in the meticulous attention to detail and the seamless integration of architectural and interior elements. The project’s interior design reflects the same principles of connectivity and openness that guide the architectural layout. Spaces are thoughtfully arranged to encourage interaction, with areas like the central atrium equipped with a safety net for children to play safely while maintaining visual connection with other parts of the home.

A key feature of the design is the inclusion of functional spaces that promote specific activities and interactions among the occupants. For instance, the central atrium is equipped with a safety net, creating a secure space where children can play and interact with the different levels of the house. This feature not only provides a dedicated area for children’s activities but also strengthens the overall connectivity within the home.

Additionally, the rooftop garden on the upper terrace, equipped with planters for growing vegetables and greenery, serves as a gathering space for family and friends. This outdoor area is designed to encourage social interaction and relaxation, offering a tranquil retreat from the urban environment below.
