Inspired in part by local geology, Vergence House embraces the program and complexities of its site to the fullest potential, providing views, light, and an intimate connection to the environment.
The geological concepts "erratic" and "vergence" help situate the home within its broader context. Like an "erratic" stone that has been moved along a glacial path and deposited in a new milieu, the home nestles into its sloping site, expressing itself as something different from the surrounding neighborhood character, at some moments in quiet repose and at others in striking contrast.
In response to its massing, the concept continues to look to geological "vergence," or the phenomenon created in stone flows and the alignment of folds in the tectonic surface. Taking cues from the texture created, it was used to develop the skins and materials of the home. Wrapped in a high-tech stone and aluminum composite panel, the skin folds up the walls, over the roof, and into the interior like the flowing stone. Highly textured wood prefabricated panels clad the outside of the building and play with light and shadow, akin to the rich textures of the rocks within the folded and uplifted Flatirons formations found directly behind the site.
While presented with a complex client program, the house was designed to support rest, work, and play, and to produce all its power and protein, resulting in a near-net-zero energy home. The result is a cohesive program that provides a powerful connection to the site.
