The completion and opening of Shantou Bay Tunnel break the spatial barrier of the inner bay and connect the important cultural and tourist attractions located on the north and south coasts. The wind towers on the north and south sides of the tunnel face each other across the sea, of which the wind tower on the south bank features a construction area of 248m² and a building height of 64.3m, while the wind tower on the north bank has a construction area of 297.5m ² and a building height of 64.0m. Due to the consideration of the landscape strategy of traffic facilities, one tower looks strong and one tower looks soft, while one tower looks quiet and the other tower looks smart, enhancing each other's beauty. Based on the mountain, sea and city, a scene symbol highlighting the culture of the home town of overseas Chinese and integrating the waterscape green space can be formed.
The wind tower on the north bank is in the commercial port area with a history of 100 years. Its design draws from the practice of pillars in the residential houses of the home town of overseas Chinese in Shantou, and integrates the soft wooden pillars with rigid marble pillar to form a lotus pillar with vertical grooves, which expresses the sense of belonging to the urban cultural context and the compatibility of the old and the new with a relatively static composition. The wind tower on the south bank is in the Haojiang New District, and its design adopts a more modern body construction technique. The dynamic space with great tension is formed through volume twisting and skin changes, reflecting the soft beauty and elegance like sea water and silk, highlighting the landmark of an important gateway of the Maritime Silk Road.
The bay waterfront area of Shantou, where the wind towers are located, has fewer visitors during the day and more visitors at night. Therefore, the design arranges LED lights along the longitudinal contour of the facades of the two towers to form a unique medium building skin, and promotes the interaction between virtual image and physical space through dramatic landscape lighting and video system, so that the wind tower becomes a carrier for the emotional experience of the digital city. Since the project is put into use, "QiaoJian Shantou" and "520" and other light show activities aiming at promoting the night economy in the surrounding area have been carried out here and won a good social response.
