Vanke's million-square-meter Zhongxing City, within Shanghai’s inner ring, on the main axis of the historic Jing'an District, is a decades long vision of the ideal future city, a counterpart to recent mega mixed-use projects in Manhattan, Tokyo, and Seoul.
Within this master plan, MEC Studio, in collaboration with Shanghai Vanke Real Estate and Interiors by Horizontal Design, has designed the “AUTHOR” Clubhouse and Sales Gallery for the integrated Residential component of the development.
MEC Studio’s design objective was to strive for a bold expression of "Simplexity", an uncomplicated form with layers of detail & proportion, texture & materiality, and light & shadow, to evoke an opulent sense of "Calmness".
As this building would be completed first, an iconic and more luxurious ‘gateway’ was encouraged by the client, to serve as a ‘first impression’ to the development and stand out from its context.
MEC Studio proposed to distill and organize the fundamental volumes, the main hall and grand stair, into two interlocking triple-height spaces. This organizing concept connects three floors, from street level and clubhouse facilities up to the elevated private residential landscape. These volumes are framed by a series of thick wall planes, forming the pronounced outer shell. Two large full-height sections of glazing emphasize the volumetric intersection, with one addressing the street and entrance, and the other opening to the small urban plaza. This juxtaposition of solid walls and large glazed openings was inspired by the Grand Central Terminal in New York City, and its large windows with tight vertical mullion spacing.
The street and plaza level façades are clad in an off-white limestone, framing intricate steel-framed glazed doors and windows. With just a few ornamental accents—textured door handles and crafted light fixtures—the overall heavy base serves as contrast to the colorful upper façade showpiece.
Covering the vast majority of the building, the rhythmic curved aluminum panels and curved glass, in a randomized pattern, provide a "curtain-like" aesthetic, creating texture and depth, while casting a variety of light and shadow gradients.
The iridescent finish serves as an amorphous skin, which changes colors and sheens under different sunlight and weather conditions. Embracing this unpredictable and dazzling effect, the building shifts its “mood” at different times throughout the day, and is a reflection of nature’s surrounding atmosphere at any given moment. Mixes of bright silver, green, and blue hues shimmer under clear day conditions. As the dusk approaches, the facade animates its subtle metallic gradient with deeper shades and warm accents reflecting the setting sun. When night falls, the panels take on enamel blue and purple tones, as it transitions with the façade lighting.
To achieve this colorful and lustrous finish, MEC Studio and the Client embarked on a long sourcing exercise, considering various material options, including tiles with pearlescent glazing, treated stainless steel, and titanium shingles. After various mock-ups were built, an exclusive coating for the aluminum panels was customized to the project’s undulating façade, achieving its desired color variation and iridescent effects.
