This poject a great opportunity to test our design principles on a larger
scale. Since it sits mid-block and since its coloration is consistent
with the adjacent buildings, it goes almost unnoticed from the avenues
that bookend it. However, as you move up the street, the building begins
to intrigue. While buildings with clear glass facades allow maximum
light and views, they compromise privacy. This thin face however, allows
abundant natural light into the interior while providing privacy to the
homeowner. It creates a layer of intrigue that shields but does not
conceal and it is activated throughout the course of the day by light
and movement. Once inside, the use of thin planes and natural light
continue to drive the design. The stair is a collage of materials that
come together in a Kandinsky-like juxtaposition of points, lines and
planes. This language moves fluidly from the main entry through each
floor of the house.
