Texas Western College (now UTEP) football player Larry K. Durham, made University history when he scored the first touchdown in the Sun Bowl Stadium on September 21, 1963. After graduating in 1966, Durham remained a loyal UTEP alumnus and in 2001 donated $5 million toward an $11 million sports center. Opening in August 2002, and named after the donor, the Larry K. Durham Center is two stories and measures 65,000 square feet. The Center maintains strength and conditioning stations, a sports medicine center, a student-athlete lounge/computer center, football coaches’ offices, locker rooms, an equipment room, the athlete volunteer office, and The Hall of Champions. The walls of the Center contain artwork, photographs, and information boards which are designed to celebrate the Miner athletes, past and present.
