Fridbjorg’s URLAB (Urban Research LAB) is a space of inspiration and initiative that investigates architecture’s sustainable value creation for the lives of people in urban spaces. URLAB is launched in Copenhagen in December 2011 and based in New York City, where it is at the frontier with an international dialog about the development in architecture, urban planning and urban innovation. URLAB’s research and dissemination is aimed at influencing the public discourse about architecture and urbanity with a greater emphasis on the meaning of architecture to people’s living conditions and social relations, which is what we call Human Architecture; architecture for people. Human Architecture recognizes architecture’s role as framing a visible and mental way of living in society. Architecture for people is architecture, which is considerate towards the people whose lives it organizes; towards the future it creates and towards the urban, social and cultural contexts in which it is included. This is about shaping architecture from a basic empathy for people’s life worlds. URLAB explores a new topic every month, which anticipates future challenges and possibilities for architecture for creating better frameworks for people’s lives. These investigations shape a future oriented thinking about form giving, physical solutions that motivate people’s orientation in urban structures; their actions and their way of living; in sustainable directions.
