The Bramalea City Centre is the civic centre of Brampton - a suburb of the City of Toronto. In recent years, what were once proto-typical suburbs are now rapidly urbanizing in ways that do not reflect our ingrained assumptions about city building. According to density projections for the area, a city that has a popultion of less than 500,000 in 2006 will boast 2 million + population by the year 2063.With increasingly stringent regulations on urban sprawl, current densities will rise and what is already developed land will be in need of re-imagining. This project takes on the suburban mall complex, a defacto civic centre. Developed at two scales, the urban and the architectural, the project culminates in a hybrid building that is simultaneously building and plaza; wrapped around the road from above and below creating new civic space, literally integrating with the street. This project was created as part of the Culture and Metropolisstudio under Rodolphe El Khoury and Robert Levit.
