Installed at the heart of Place Bellecour in Lyon, Urban Weaving is a monumental and temporary art installation that transforms one of the city’s most iconic public spaces into an oasis of freshness, encounter, and contemplation.
Urban Weaving was created by a team of designers composed of Romain Froquet, artist, Tristan Israel, architect, AIA Life Designers, a multidisciplinary agency and Biogeo Constructions. The installation pays tribute to the Canuts, Lyon’s historic silk weavers, by drawing on the textile imagination through a series of wooden arches and suspended draperies.
At the crossroads of art, architecture, and urban ecology, Urban Weaving offers a sensory promenade punctuated by shaded areas, water features, seating, and new perspectives on the city’s heritage. In subtle dialogue with the historical architecture and the vibrant fabric of the Presqu’île, the work provides a poetic yet functional response to contemporary climate challenges, while foreshadowing the sustainable transformation of Place Bellecour.
