With 40,000 vacant or abandoned lots within its city limits,
Philadelphia’s low-density urban core epitomizes the hurdles that many
cities face during revitalization. Our proposal consolidated vacant
lots into two types of parks; linear parks referred to as capillaries
and five-acre hubs. The capillaries form a network of trails for
biking, walking, and running that can be used for both recreation and
transportation, allowing residents from all over the city a connection
to downtown, the wooded country to the north, the fresh-water estuaries
to the south, and the riverfront to the east. The capillaries link to
existing parks, destinations in the city, and to new five acre hub parks
that serve as public squares offering neighborhood-driven amenities and
connections to other modes of public transit.
