Urban Thread is my 4th year design studio
project. It is a 3.5 million SqFt
masterplan for Union Station in Los Angeles, that is in response to an existing
RFP from the Metro Transit Authority.
The plan consists of an elongated series of building components that house
multiple program types including mixed-residential, commercial and office
space, retail and entertainment space, and a multi-mode transportation hub.
At the macro scale Los Angeles exists largely on a lateral, single
surface datum. This is due, historically, to sidelong spacial availability and
fiscal practicality. As a result the
city has promoted a municipal transportation and vehicle heavy standard of
living, as well as tendency to use space less efficiently.
A review of our studios urban analysis, particularly that of
pedestrian and bike flow, suggests points of origin/terminus within the
pedestrian experience. These points of origin/terminus suggest that
the lateral datum of Los Angeles does have an (albeit) shallow threaded network
condition. As a result of this condition
the city surface experiences minor +/- disruptions which, in turn, display
three interrelated tectonic typologies.
Urban Thread addresses these typologies, or plate
conditions, and examines how a converging of these boundaries might exploit Los
Angeles’ limited vertical thread condition in an effort to use space more
efficiently, thus cultivating a new archetype within the ever expanding
transportation and pedestrian experience.
