Lagoon scale
The fist challenge is to preserve the natural diversity and the balance of the lagoon by reducing the impact of maritime traffic. The most important part of tourist cruising ships would accost at the Lido. This village would be connected to Venice by light and fast maritime transport. The few cruising ships which would accost at Venice would follow a way passing to the South of the Giudecca (island on the South of the city).
City scale
At the city scale, the project aims to preserve Venice and its buildings while connecting it to the other cities of the lagoon with light transports. City’s connection axis to the continent by the bridge would integrate new railways and a local line of tram/train. These new networks would replace part of the roads trafic. Car access would then be reduced and the carparks would be moved on Mestre close to the train and tramway stations.
Site scale
The proposal project allows to keep the main urban characteristics of Venice and to create a continuity with existing area. The site is connected with the city by different means of transportation (tramway, aerial tramway, vaporetto) and by new bridges. Exchange areas between the ground and the sea are created. A green corridor similar to the lagoon rivers would cross the site giving a public garden needed by the city.Business centre (North-East side)
A main business area with a high density is created close Venice train station. It would signaled the entrance of the city from Mestre and it would attract international companies. Thanks to this way, the companies would be a source of money for the site development.
Tronchetto (western side)
This part is extended by a platform to become as long as the others docks. The base of this platform holds all the port facilities to receive transatlantic liners and ferries. It’s an exchange point between Venice and the Mediterranean Sea. Towers will be built on the platform. They will show the sea entrance of Venice and mainly contain offices and accommodation for international workers.
Bridge along Zatteres (southern side)
A bridge connects East and West. It’s the main link between the three docks. It creates a continuity along the seaside as well as a porosity between the pools and the lagoon for the smallest boats. Moreover, it is bordered by mixed buildings and allows the passage of the monorail. It’s an axis dedicated to the passage, the walk or the contemplation of the lagoon. This combination of functions, creates a place singularity and takes part in its functionning.
Housing modules
Along the bridge, facing the lagoon and the Giudecca, housing modules are fixed. Temporary users who come in Venice for a short period can use them. Architectural scale (typologie 2)
The developed building typology combine various functions. It is located along the bridge. It accommodate housing, offices and collectives activities (nursery, laundry, community room, etc).
External spaces The building is hollowed in its centre to create a Venetian typology built vertically. It has big collective terraces similar to venitian plaza (Campos). They are connected to eachothers by external walkway similar to semi privates streets.
Housing
The building has 72 flats with 2 or 3 orientations. Flat dimensions are between 53 and 108 sqm. The organization of dwelling spaces makes it possible to have a great modularity.
