Cinema
has always been about spectacle. In the early days, countless
journeyed in order to glimpse the technological marvel of film.Over
time the Pushkinsky has been tarnished by various surface additions
and alterations. The original ideas have been clouded and the once
vibrant façade has become busy with advertisements and
superfluous information. The clean lines of the original structure
have vanished. Much of the once bright luster is gone.
The
Pushkinsky has given into a culture that relies upon in-your-face
advertisements and immediate sensory stimuli. Changes to the once
vibrant exterior have rendered the building more as billboard than
cinema. The URBAN LANTERN attempts to return the cinema hall
back to its intended image as a fantastic light box teeming with
imagination.
The
intent of the proposed design is to translate the Pushkinsky’s
original form into a contemporary beacon of filmic and social
interaction.
The
design utilizes three transformative strategies:
Remove
all unnecessary ornamentation from the exterior surfaces.
Introduce
a new adhered, dynamic shell to the exterior made of contemporary
materials.
Relocate/Redevelop
current advertisement signage to meet the needs of the cinema while
keeping the overall concept intact.
