The competition:
The event was organized by the Chamber of Architects of Turkey and the Antalya Branch under the auspices of UIA. The aim was to design the square of the future by using developing technology. The participants were free to decide about the scenario of the project and determine the exhibitions program, the target audience, scale, function and location of the square.
Our concept:
Public squares in a common sense are perceived to be square or round places equipped with benches, trees or fountains that are cited in different spots on the urban grid. The aim of this project is to redefine this perception by emphasizing on the notions of flow, condensation or string out (of the crowd inside the structure), and the interaction between the users.
Thus the suggested public square is designed as an organic summation of orbits and movements that run through the urban grid. The structure is loose at the beginning of the orbits, becomes denser as the users are moving at the heart of the structure and strings out again as the users reach the ending parts.
The construction is from metal and wood that constantly changes its shape, reproduces and mirrors itself, is immersed and emerged from the ground and is developed like an organism who needs the motion and the action of the users in order to become alive.
People are free to choose the way they want to wander through the structure. They are allowed to walk either inside or on the structure and in that way they are encouraged to claim for their selves a part of the structure, defining in that way their own public square.
The walls of the construction are able to afford panels with information about the events that taking place in the city, works of art of vagabond artist, or even artifacts that the users can create there on empty sheets, leaving in that way their personal sign on the public square and reinforced the interactive character of the structure.
The suggested public square is not designed for a particular city, but it is a flexible construction that can be reformed, adjusted and meet the needs of any urban grid.
This proposal is worthy a second chance due to its innovative spatial formulation, which functions as a “natural” carrier of human movement and encourages the use and interaction of public spaces. It is a concept deprived of the essence of monumentality, by proposing a structure consisted of common materials, that are familiar to the users and that can be easily renewed, if that is necessary.
