Program: To develop a design for a high-rise residential building(s) and townhomes with parking. The program requires an equal mix of one bedroom units, two bedroom units, with some three bedroom units on the upper floors, in addition to a lobby(ies), parking, tenant storage, and MEP spaces, the program includes a health club/spa.
Site:An urban lot at 18th Street and South Prairie Avenue, across from the historic Glessner House site.
Architectural Process:My initial idea of intertwining access paths led me to imagine how the public could circulate through the long and narrow site. Initial concept diagrams of proposed access and circulation paths through the site defined the structure and geometry of the high-rise condo complex and townhomes.
Architectural Solution:Pedestrian paths defined residential circulation and edges of structure; these were critical in defining the final design and massing of the buildings and landscape. The final design suggests an urban jungle of colors, heights, scales, forms, and a new way of living. In addition, a topographical variation in the outdoor plaza space, shaped by circulation paths, offers intimate spaces for repose and congregation for residents.
