Brief:The Illinois Institute of Technology, College of Architecture, initiated the design and construction of a sustainable demonstration home in collaboration with Genesis Housing Development Corporation in the south side of Chicago. Urban Green House I is a model home that integrates affordable and sustainable design in order to showcase Chicago's commitment to green building.Site:House I occupies a corner lot at 44th Street and S. Vincennes Avenue in Chicago's South side.
Architectural Process:The Urban Green House studio was established to give students first hand process and culture of architectural practice. A group of upper level and undergraduate students designed the project during the first semester. During the second semester, students were actively involved with the design and construction documents.
Personal Contribution:My collaboration to this project involved the creation of the site/landscape plan, as well as preparation of the construction documents.
Architectural Solution:Urban House I presented the challenge of integrating architectural form with the formal and technical demands of both sustainability and affordability. A natural prairie landscape concept was adopted to the overall design of the landscape and features. Storm water is collected in a cistern, reducing the use of potable water for irrigation. Urban Green House I has a major landscape feature, the rain garden, which provides a natural habitat, as well as it provides stormwater management.
