Approached by a client with an idea and a business plan, the practice undertook the interior design of the pilot Urban Golf outlet, now expanded to include three highly successful Urban Golf locations – a leisure activity that allows a golfer to play in conjunction with a machine simulating any golf course in the world. The traditional golf club, with its hidebound associations, has been self-consciously juxtaposed with its hip urban locations.
Urban Golf High Street Kensington is the latest and third addition to the Urban Golf brand, and is the largest indoor golf venue in the UK, boasting seven state-of-the-art golf simulators and a revolutionary coaching facility. The club is located within the High Street Underground Station, and pays homage to its surrounding location with a contemporary quirky charm. The design of the High Street Kensington location is markedly different from the two other locations, expanding the idea and realm of the Urban Golf brand. Inspired by English country homes and gentlemen’s clubs, the interior of the club is atmospheric and comfortable, furnished with traditional Chesterfield sofas and chairs, dark walnut panelling and floors, and Victorian inspired wallpaper. The drama of the space is intensified by full height wall murals depicting English Victoriana but delivered in a modern way, created in collaboration with illustrator Eduardo Recife and graphic designers Mammal.
