PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
20th May 2012.
A 6,1-magnitude earthquake changed the shape of Crevalcore and many other cities in North-Central Italy.
It generated urban voids, scars in the historical urban fabric.
How do we fill the gaps?
The idea is to create secret urban gardens, to retain the original facade, and to empty the inner volume of the
existing building. This generates a place of the memory, a secret urban wild, where nature took over in May
2012. These urban voids are occupied with open-air gardens or sometimes layered with services, such like little
libraries or reading rooms.
In the main square the intention is to generate an urban forest, enlarging the territory of the public plaza.
Memorial birches trees rise from the structural grid of the previous building, and intersect the new facility, a
mediatheque, designed in cross laminated wood and glulam.
Two gardens are created, one on the ground level, incorporating the plaza within the new building, and one on
the roof top, which could be used as a cafeteria or an outdoor space for events.
