Wankhede Stadium was constructed in 1974 as one of India's first post-independence cricket stadia. In 2008, Mumbai Cricket Association took an initiative to upgrade the stadium to host the World Cup final in 2011. The two out of the four stands (North and South) were completed demolished and re-built and the remaining two (east and the west) were upgraded to match the new stands. The roofing system was upgraded to be a cantilevered type so as to eliminate the supporting columns to facilitate an obstruction free viewing.
