The development of the Petrobras project in Santos – a complex that will be built in three phases, reaching a total of 140.000 built squared meters destined for 7,000 employees - was conducted in accordance with its urban insertion in the Valongo Region, respecting the historical, architectural and urban factors inherent to the plot. The project’s implementation considered the conservation of a segment of the São Paulo Railway’s warehouse, preserved as a historical reference of the railroad’s initial activity in serving one of the main ports in the country.
The symbolic expression of the railway’s linearity is strengthened through the continuity and the transformation of the colonnade. The original pillars of the nineteenth century, preserved in the old warehouse, are stretched through the ‘orquid house’, a linking and transitional element within the project, thus becoming the new pillars to support the XXI century roof, an expression of high tech innovation.
The spatial organization, a result of the building’s new morphology, oscillates between open and enclosed spaces, as can be seen through the square on the first floor, covered by a glass structure with varying opaque, translucent and transparent parts. Meanwhile on the third floor, the large plaza allows the integration between people and activities, a permeability between the suggested elements of the program through the different phases of construction, as well as a comfortable environment for its occupants.
Sustainability practices upheld, such as the predominant use of natural light, the reduction of water consumption, water reusage and the recovery of endangered or endemic species of Santos’ flora, ensure energy efficiency as well as contribute to obtaining a LEED Gold certification for the project.
