The Austin, Texas, office of Lord Aeck Sargent collaborated with Houston-based firm Harrison Kornberg Architects to design the University Towers campus housing complex at Texas Southern University. Opened in August 2016, University Towers houses 800 students and boasts a 350-seat dining hall, integrating mixed-use spaces to enhance the student experience.
Located at the campus edge along the central organizing spine of the campus, the seven-story mid-rise building acts as a gateway for TSU, engaging one of the main approaches from Wheeler Street with an urban plaza and ground-floor retail. The building is arranged around a three-sided courtyard that opens towards the campus, with common areas located on the ground floor and student residences on the upper floors. A ground-floor central dining area, as well as a mix of plazas, seating areas and connections to adjacent building lobbies, creates a lively space for student engagement at both the building and campus scale.
Large windows throughout the building provide generous natural light, and exposed concrete complements the building’s loft aesthetic. Backlit environmental graphics integrate wayfinding elements into the broader interior design of the building. Social and study spaces on each floor encourage connection among students at a community scale. Rooftop terraces on the seventh floor offer outdoor gathering spaces with dramatic skyline views.
