University of Tartu is the only university in the Baltic States that is represented in the international ranking „QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016“ with six specialties, including computer science and information systems specialties. The latter will have a new modern school building by 2019, bringing University of Tartu IT, mathematics as well as business students together into one building.
Architect 11 participated with an entry “Iconicum” (winning design’s visual solutions added), which was chosen by the University of Tartu and the city governance of Tartu as the best architectural solution that meets the expectations of the field and fits into the urban city scape.
The university’s new IT-centre “Iconicum” will consist of two parts, firstly the main corpus will be designed and built that could later have an additional 5000 m2 extension with a simple and logical connection.
The winning entry’s team leader is Illimar Truverk, co-authors include Kristjan Lind, Sander Paljak and Joanna Kordemets. According to the authors the design was completed as teamwork, where all the best sets of ideas were combined into a whole.
“Our design’s target was to relate the complex with one of the symbols of the city – Vabaduse Bridge – and with the park nearby, to which an academic building would add a signified beginning or an ending” said the co-author Sander Paljak.
University of Tartu architectural competition’s victory followed by the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences architectural competition’s win.
