The University of Lethbridge required the assistance and services of ARFAI to remodel a portion of the Student Union Building, Level 2 cafeteria area. The design was to allow for an expansion of an adjacent retail unit, the provision and introduction of a new bistro within the cafeteria area, and the formation and design of a gallery space. The work involved small portions of mechanical and electrical alterations, together with changes to interior finishes and fixtures in order that the renovation work would complement the existing facility. Large photocopiers and vending machines were also incorporated into the design and recessed into spaces which would not intrude on the overall function of the various spaces. The formation and design of the new gallery allowed for a flexible display space with movable and rotating display panels fixed to the structural concrete columns. New suspended drywall ceilings were also added to the space in a segmented fashion and suspended at varying heights and angles within the space to create a dynamic and inspiring space to display artwork and also view multimedia presentations. The introduction of the new bistro provided a dual use, so that part of the display counter could rotate and provide a reception for ticket sales for events within the gallery space. Additional seating was also provided within the gallery space and the bistro counter was designed to embrace the original building features with the use of exposed concrete aggregate bases and panels.
