Imagine having a sick child and being forced to visit multiple locations scattered across a sprawling hospital campus to resolve their healthcare needs. This was a reality for parents at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Re-imagining that service delivery led UIHC to a new world-class children’s hospital.
The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital provides an innovative, comprehensive healthcare system for children. Now with all pediatric services together, the quality of care is enhanced through unified care-team collaboration. The 500,000-square foot, 14-story structure includes 134 beds and two unfinished floors for future demands. The lobby offers a theater, dining area, learning center, and gift shop. The facility creates community pride and enhances the university’s reputation as a top pediatric, research, and teaching institution.
The desire to create a daylit, view-driven healing environment encouraged the use of extensive glass throughout. Large patient room windows and two-story lobby glazing creates extraordinary connections to nature, open space, playgrounds, outdoor eating areas, curated gardens, native trees, wildflowers, and local art. Proprietary glazing was developed and tornadic impact studies included wind tunnel tests, software analysis, and laboratory testing of reinforced glass to ensure resilience against Iowa’s severe weather, allowing the hospital to remain functional after a major storm.
The top floor, used by patients and their families, contains an outdoor garden, café, chapel, break-out areas, and the “Press Box” with views into neighboring Kinnick Stadium. The bird’s eye view of home football games is an exceptionally unique feature. At the end of the first quarter, fans have instituted a new award-winning tradition in college football by doing “The Wave” to patients. The energy of 70,000 Hawkeyes acknowledging the children is truly heartwarming. Caregivers mention the positive energy shift in patients who forget about their circumstances while enjoying the game and extraordinary views.
