University of Illinois at Chicago Richard J. Daley Library Corridor Oasis Renovation

Chicago, IL, United States

YEAR
2010
The intent of this project was to create an area, or ‘oasis’, for students, faculty, staff and visitors of the Daley Library to interact, study and gather between classes and during extended breaks. Located within the south lobby, the newly renovated oasis, is a underutilized area transformed by Bailey Edward into a comfortable and supportive learning environment. A unique element of the oasis is the integration of a high-resolution LCD display panel. The display panel digitally exhibits materials from the Library’s special art collections, as well as materials from the donors who funded the project, UIC Provost R. Michael Tanner and Eileen Tanner.
This project was honored by the Association of Licensed Architects with a Silver Award and by the Central Illinois Chapter of the American Institute of Architects with an Interior Architecture Award.
Design elements were strategically chosen by Bailey Edward to complement the existing circular structural sculpture pieces creating an engaging solution which furthers the creative qualities of the oasis. The space is golden-hued and equipped with contemporary, comfortable lounge seating with tablet arms. Due to the location and traffic surrounding the space, a dropped ceiling was incorporated to minimize noise.
