A two-phase project, Ponderosa Commons mixed-use program includes a residence, Student Housing & Hospitality Services (SHHS) admin offices, child care, café, fitness facility, end of trip facilities, a commuter student collegium, informal learning spaces as well as studio, class and office space for Fine Arts (Phase 1, Audain Art Centre) and the Faculty of Education (Phase 2).
Ponderosa Commons brings together a mix of social, academic and administrative activities and serves a critical place-making role as a secondary gateway to the campus.
Ponderosa Commons is a prototype for the first in a series of five, concentrated mixed-use developments on the UBC campus to create 24/7 centres. It is also specifically designed to contribute to realizing the University’s mission to be the greenest university campus in North America. It integrates information technologies and hardware to encourage students to monitor their individual energy consumption and ecological footprint. It is also designed to achieve a very high LEED® Gold in Phase 1 and in Phase 2 (under construction) an unprecedented 105 kWh/m² for a mixed-use building. The buildings have a deliberately narrow floorplate to achieve cross-ventilation.
