Just as its name implies, Beijing united university doesn’t existed in one concentrated site, but composed by 15 distributed campuses spread all over the Beijing city. The union university is well-known for its strategic flexibility - education networks instead of the overpowering political - ceremonial spaces that often be kept up with the Joneses by the most famous universities in China.
The main campus is located at the north of Beijing city, near the urban axis of Beijing, as the result of the construction period across 1970’s – 2000’s and merger with another college, the campus space is scattered and the buildings have totally difference.
The last big reserve college site in Beijing city, school’s ambition, modest budget, planning based on the situation, we develop a complex building --- an education network --- that can meets the conditions and provide the maximum park-lized public spaces. The complex’ program includes a library, teaching rooms, laboratories and an activity center. All academic programs are arranged in a simple structure --- “L” shape slabs’ stacking with 8 meter structural grid, the building preserves the maximum site for a dramatic park for the students and staff. Gap gardens on the building puncture the bulk, make it can be adapt to the context.
At the park, a series of rectangle gardens link the dispersion of 10 meters that between the campus ground and the plaza of auditorium up. Beneath the park surface, placed an auditorium with 2500 seats, a cafeteria and a service center for campus life, a long sunken atrium connects the main building and the service part.
At the new core area of Beijing, the new complex building will displays the ambition and imagination of university. The largest campus park in Beijing’s downtown will become the most important symbol of the united university --- for the campus and for the city.
