The public service trade union UNISON approached Squire and Partners in 2005 to design a new HQ building on a prominent site facing Euston Road. The brief was for a building projecting a strong identity for the organisation, and providing flexible accommodation for the various activities taking place.
The site occupies an entire urban block and retains, as part of its development, the Grade II listed former Elizabeth Garrett Anderson hospital for women. Squire and Partners presented the concept of a ‘village square’ rather than an individual structure - a campus of buildings integrating new and old, and providing a strong architectural presence on Euston Road. The ‘heart’ of the scheme is a striking central atrium, surrounded by public spaces including a staff cafe and communal seating areas. Offices, TV/radio studios, press rooms, conference and catering facilities, and a spectacular top floor debating chamber are located on the floors surrounding the atrium.
UNISON’s central message - strength through unity - was portrayed through architecture’s oldest symbol of teamwork; the column. Stone columns on UNISON’s main tower are varied in their widths, and located irregularly across the facade. This varied pattern of individual members sits flush within a complete frame.
The HQ has been designed to the highest conceivable environmental standards, lowering the total carbon emissions for a development of this size by 53% (the GLA target was 20%) and rated BREEAM Excellent. 20% of energy required to service the building is from renewable sources.
Squire and Partners were also commissioned to fitout the offices, using a colour coding system throughout the complex to provide visual orientation. A system of bold graphic logos denote uses and storage locations within the largely open plan offices.
The response from UNISON since moving into their offices in May 2011 has been overwhelmingly positive, citing the building design as having fundamentally changed their working culture for the better. General Secretary Dave Prentice says ‘I have never seen so many smiles on so many faces since we moved in. The building is a genuine joy to work in’.
