Union City High School now features a rooftop athletic facility that showcases a regulation-sized high school baseball field, a soccer/football field, a grandstand
area, locker rooms, and a concession stand. Bleacher seating in this new arena accommodates up to 2,000 spectators.
RSC Architects (RSC) was the lead architect for the new Union City High School, located in one of the most densely populated areas of the United States. This project not only provides a new state-of-the-art educational facility for one of New Jersey’s neediest school districts, but it is also part of a redevelopment program for the city and its surrounding community.
The existing Emerson High School and Union Hill High School were merged into this new 366,400 SF high school, which is designed to accommodate 1,700 students. The educational spaces are housed in a four-story, L-shaped classroom wing with two stories of shared activity spaces located at the core of the school. Program features include 66 classrooms, home economics rooms, art and dance studios, technology labs, a media center, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, an outdoor courtyard, and a 900-seat performing arts auditorium – a first for the district.
The project was completed in Sept. 2009.
