An earth sheltered basement and gently angled sod roof will help this
new house in Ridgeway, WI disappear into the hill it nestles against.
The design prioritizes local and natural materials. WholeTrees round
wood timbers are all sourced from the surrounding 40 acre property;
milled lumber will come from local mills rather than lumber yards;
Interior flooring and exterior facing stone will be Limestone from a
local quarry and the walls will be straw bale. The house orients to the
south for maximum solar exposure and will have in floor heating, active
and passive PV systems and natural stone floors.
The trees were peeled in July and harvested in December 2011. Timber
frame pre-fabrication began on site in January. Full construction is
now underway and will proceed through fall 2012. For regular updates on
the construction progress, check out the owners blog, Digging in the Driftless
