Under the Dome
Rapid development of scientific and technological progress has led to global changes in our life. Civilization rapidly acquires fantastic technologies that are shaping our future. With the emergence of new forms and structures, being qualitatively different from the previous ones, the apparent inevitability of evolutionary changes in religious architecture challenges us not only to bridge over the existing differences, but to monumentalize and preserve the traditions through their integration into modern life, based on a reasonable synthesis, uniting the past, the present and the future. Our task is to apply new capabilities, extract from the inane the matter being the basis for the creation of legends, and having spotted the inconceivable gleams of beauty and harmony, show them within the reach of human perception range, in order to create something brand new, that wasn't available to any one until today.
According to religious worldview: God is infinite and incomprehensible. And although the phenomenon of infinity cannot be completely understood by human mind, it can be displayed graphically in the form of a logarithmic spiral. The central part of the logarithmic spiral, viewed through a microscope, will have the same appearance as its widest part, visible at a distance of many light-years away. Pine cones, snail shells, animals' horns and arrangement of sunflower seeds, cyclone cloud systems and star systems – they all form a logarithmic spiral. Even a human finger, composed of three phalanges, takes a spiral shape when bent. The infinity of time and space divide a pine cone and a galaxy, but the principle remains the same, showing us one of the majestic God's purposes, equally fair for all religions, faiths and worldviews and uniting them all. This unifying idea forms the basis for the new dome, in order to continue the unity and development of various identities and cultural circles, viewed through the prism of the experience gained by a person, having every intention of changing this world, and changing it using new ideas, tools and technologies.
The core of the reconstructed building is the renovated dome, formed by a logarithmic spiral and creating the vault of the church nave. Aiming for infinity, the dome spiral flows from the edge to the center upwards, symbolizing the idea of unification of different religions and affiliations, filling the space with a new sense of meaning. The dome design is a metal frame finished with adjustable opacity curved glass panels (SPD SMART WINDOWS), allowing, through the effect of electric current, to make the dome completely opaque, transparent or frosted in a split second. As the light in the church is a symbol of the Divine light and specific requirements, arising from symbolism and functional purpose, are imposed to the illumination level and lighting location of each part of the church, the uniform distribution of of glazing of the renewed vault and section-by-section programmable control of the adjustable opacity glass panels provide the possibility to regulate the natural lighting in every part of the premise. Spherical vault of the church and use of latest-generation multimedia projectors make it possible to simultaneously project unlimited range of options for the interior of the temple and 3D projections, for their beauty and realism equal to stained-glass panels or mural painting, whether it is a projection of the authentic dome designed by R. Guastavino Company, a variety of interiors of the temples in the world, or the space of the Universe. Projecting accompanied by built-in loudspeaker systems, can be both static and dynamic, and properties of adjustable opacity glasses make it possible to turn translucent dome structures into a back-projection screen, turning our notion of space upside down.
