The canopy project at LEGOLAND Florida Resort, designed and fabricated by ADAS, is dedicated to enhancing the Miniland experience. Serving as a sheltered haven, it not only shields against diverse weather challenges but also elevates the overall atmosphere of creativity and wonder. This canopy stands as a testament to innovation and resilience, harmonizing LEGOLAND's immersive attractions with the imperative of weather-proof preservation.
The primary challenge lies in the delicate nature of Miniland's intricate LEGO creations, exposed to Florida's unpredictable climate. From scorching sun to sudden rainstorms, the delicate structures faced accelerated wear, risking fading colours and potential damage. Visitors keen on exploring the captivating landscapes often experienced disruptions due to weather conditions, impacting overall enjoyment and comfort. The need for a protective canopy became increasingly evident, aiming to ensure a comfortable and uninterrupted exploration of Miniland's wonders, regardless of external weather.
The project's brilliance unfolded through an innovative design, incorporating lightweight and durable tensile membrane canopies connected by ETFE truss and tower skylights which further enhanced natural lighting within the covered areas. Strategically segmenting the area, the design ensured comprehensive coverage for iconic clusters like the Kennedy Space Center and New York City, balancing aesthetic and functional considerations.
Addressing wind dynamics through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) ensured stability, validated during Hurricane Ian with minimal observed damage. Completed in 2021, this triumph exemplifies ADAS's foresight, sparking excitement for future ventures in theme parks and projects.
