A Site at the Crossroads of Landscapes and Cultures

The architecture of the Cartier-Roberval archaeological site enhancement project embodies a subtle harmony between history, contemplation, and landscape. The interpretive trail and observation footbridge, like chapters of a timeless narrative, gracefully unfold at the confluence of the Cap-Rouge River and the St. Lawrence River, in the heart of Quebec’s Capitale-Nationale region.

The aerial photography series “A Site at the Crossroads of Landscapes and Cultures” reveals the scale and richness of this site, a witness to the first foundational chapter of French colonization in North America nearly 500 years ago. Through a poetic approach, it highlights the harmonious interplay between the architectural project and the unique components of this exceptional territory.

Rooted in the human stories of Iroquoian and French cultures, the project draws inspiration from encounters and dialogue: between the natural and built landscapes, between human and scientific narratives, and between Indigenous and European cultures of the 16th century. On-site, a walkway and a footbridge, positioned perpendicularly to the railway bridge, extend over the archaeological remains and the cliffside. These structures offer an immersive 360-degree view of the archaeological site, the river, and the horizon, while deepening understanding of the site’s historical significance.

This photography series highlights the careful integration of the project within its environment. It showcases the efforts to preserve this exceptional heritage while ensuring its transmission, intact and meaningful, to future generations.
